Corgi – the king of low-floor dogs. Personality, grooming, and accessories for a breed with a big heart.

The Corgi , a charming dog with short legs and a wide smile, is a breed that has captured the hearts of people around the world – from the British royal family to Instagram influencers. But behind this charming facade lies a dog with a strong character, immense intelligence, and a passion for work .

In this post you will learn in detail:
– history of the breed
– differences between the Pembroke Corgi and the Cardigan Corgi
– character, care, health
– and most importantly: what Petto accessories will work best for Corgi?

🐾 Where does the Corgi come from?

The breed originates from Wales. Its full name is:

  • Welsh Corgi Pembroke – more popular, with a shorter tail (sometimes naturally)

  • Welsh Corgi Cardigan – larger, with a longer tail and a more massive build

The name "Corgi" likely comes from the Old Welsh words "cor" (dwarf) and "gi" (dog). Originally, they were herding dogs , used for herding cattle – their short bodies helped them avoid the kicking of cows' hooves.

📏 Appearance and construction

The Corgi is a medium-sized dog with a very distinctive silhouette. Its most important characteristics include:

  • Long body, short, strong paws

  • Ears are triangular, erect, large for the size of the head

  • Tail: short (Pembroke) or long (Cardigan)

  • Coat: medium length, double, waterproof

  • Color: red and white, tricolor, sable, blue merle (Cardigan)

Height: 25–30 cm
Weight: 10–14 kg
Average lifespan: 12–15 years

💚 Personality – intelligent, loyal and very sociable

The Corgi isn't just some "funny dog from the internet." It's a highly intelligent herding dog that needs commitment, closeness, and challenges. It can be stubborn, but also very devoted and eager to learn.

Most important character traits:

✔ Friendly towards people and children
✔ Energetic, lively
✔ Easy to train
✔ Likes to be the center of attention
✔ He can be vocal – he likes to bark
✔ May have a tendency to dominate – needs consistency

It is an ideal family dog if you provide it with adequate physical and mental activity .

🧠 Training and psychological needs

The Corgi is a working breed – highly intelligent. A walk around the block isn't enough for him. He needs:

  • olfactory games

  • learning commands

  • playing with a ball or frisbee

  • short obedience training

Note: Corgis get bored easily and may become destructive (e.g., chewing furniture) if they are not kept busy.

🛏️ The perfect bed for your Corgi – comfortable, soft, and supportive

Due to its long frame and spine, the Corgi needs a bed with adequate support . The following model works best:

  • made of foam

  • with high, enveloping sides

  • size S or M

Why Petto?

✔ Luxurious bouclé or velvet fabric
✔ Stable foam – protects joints
✔ Stylish look to match your interior
✔ Easy cleaning – important when shedding

🪜 Stairs – a must for spine health

Due to their build, Corgis should NOT jump onto beds or couches. Such movements put strain on the spine and joints.

Recommendations:

✔ 4-step version – ideal for taller furniture
✔ Filled with durable foam
✔ Fabric covers matching the beds
✔ Prevent micro-injuries and injuries

🚗 Car seat – safe driving with Corgi

Corgi travels very well, but due to its length and weight, it needs a seat with adequate space for body positioning .

✔ Oi Duo – for larger dogs or two smaller ones
✔ Seat belt fastening
✔ Foam filling
✔ Stylish design that matches the car interior

🧼 Care and health

The Corgi has a double coat – it sheds quite heavily, but is easy to maintain.

Care:

  • Brushing 2–3 times a week (daily during shedding)

  • Regular claw trimming

  • Ear and teeth check

  • Proper diet – Corgis tend to be overweight!

Health problems to watch out for:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Spine problems

  • Overweight (a very common problem!)

  • Tendency to skin diseases

👨👩👧👦 Who is the Corgi for?

✔ For families with children
✔ For active people
✔ For owners who enjoy working with dogs
✔ For those looking for a loyal, playful and intelligent dog

We don't recommend this breed to anyone who isn't ready for regular grooming, walks, and training. The Corgi isn't just a "TikTok cutie"—it's a dog that requires commitment.

Summary – a royal dog with a big heart and short legs

The Corgi is a unique breed. It combines intelligence, loyalty, and wonderful, joyful energy. It is simultaneously demanding and incredibly grateful. If you choose a Corgi, you will gain a friend who will accompany you with a smile for many years.
